Assorted Tori Tales

i first heard about Tori Amos in the early 90s with the song Cornflake Girl. a friend in Cebu told me about it the first time i dropped by there before going home to Iligan via boat. back then, plane rides were considered a luxury i had to endure 2 nights of travel to Manila where i studied college and home to our province. that semestral break, i exercised pure independence by taking that boat to Cebu before heading home as some sidetrip, tee-hee!

when i went home to Iligan via another overnight boat trip i already had the cassette tape of Under The Pink heavily playing in my borrowed walkman as company.

i then started buying all her tapes/cds even asking for cd singles from friends who went to the US. i even had a VHS copy of Little Earthquakes which i got from a friend who happens to be another toriphile.

***

when i joined a writers workshop in 1998, i met a few friends who were also into Tori. we talked in depth about her and her music, sometimes like screaming giggly fans but most often like pensive admirers. the most significant memory i have of that workshop was when we stayed at the rooftop, smoked and listened enrapt to her songs in a mini cassette player one serene evening. it was pure magic!

***

in the early 2000, i had a shirt printed out with her image. i had it made at Copylandia here in Katipunan. unfortunately, i don't know where that shirt is now. thus i intend to have another one soon.

***

when Neil Gaiman came here for the very first time, i queued up with Jaybee, another Tori fan, for more than 6 hours at Gateway just for his autograph. and yes, it was in a copy of Death the High Cost of Living where Tori wrote the intro. Full story of that embarrassing moment here.

***
about two years ago, i found this site, hereinmyhead.com, which has all the downloadable mp3s of her live performances, acoustic recordings, remix versions etc that i could get my hands on. i must have spent the entire night and day downloading and listening to them in full volume as if she had her concert in the four corners of my room.

i remember refusing a date with T that time because i was so overwhelmed with my newfound loot. i chose to stay home and listen to the downloads instead of going out with him. :p

***

just this summer, i asked my sister to get me a copy of A Comic Book Tattoo when she came home from New York. and yes, she brought me one albeit incessant whines that the "book" was too big and too heavy she had to have it shipped along with her other stuff in a balikbayan box.

another friend also came home last week of May just in time for the release of the latest Abnormally Attracted to Sin album last May 18. so yes, i got them all. ;)

***

one fine day of surfing around pinoyexchange, i chanced on a post which invited toriphiles in the Philippines to sign up to a yahoogroup and eventually attend occasional meet ups! thus on that fateful day of August 21, i met more fans in the packed Conspiracy Bar in Visayas Ave. it was a pre-birthday gig of Tori who celebrates her day every 22nd of August. i heard they have been doing this for about 5 years yet i've only heard about it now, eek!

guest performers were Isha Abubakar, Kate Torralba, Angel Aquino (who read some poems), a band called Matilda, college schoolmate Khavn de la Cruz, Tao Aves, Divine, Aba Dalena, the gorgeous Wawi Navarossa and Nerissa Guevarra who did an interpretative dance.

i have to specially say how amazed i was of Kate Torralba's performance and passion to play Tori's songs on the piano. i am actually considering of getting her own album soon.

it was quite an unforgettable night. i had goosebumps all over hearing these performers sing her songs with utter reverence. but it was more heartwarming being in a roomful of people who knew her songs by heart too.

and i'm more glad to say i've found another friend In Alden, the group's/show's captain hehe...and Siege who took the beautiful photos that night, and paid for my drink and the table charge (i think) haha! merci, friends!

***

i will forever be a toriphile. i used to have so many dreams of seeing her in my travels, like bumping on her in the airports or at a quaint cafe or some cd signing session, wherever. and i still look forward to seeing her perform live, how about starting tha petition, Alden! lol!

documented

i was leafing through my old college files when i chanced upon this paper. it's actually some agreement between us girls, cherry, claudine, tina and ate tech against two guys kuya theo and kuya ac, all my orgmates from gabay betting on the then much talked about soon to be wedding of Kris Aquino and Philip Salvador. of course no wedding ever took place and we won our much sought after iced tea from the college caf.

those were the days haha!

first day potter

got to watch harry potter 5 on i-max on the first day...but then again i always watch hp on it's first day...i'd declare it my own little holiday, my harry potter day hehehe...

watchin it on i-max though was way different even if it's but the last 20 minutes that is on 3D...whoa, pede ko mahipuan si harry hahaha!

oh, never mind if we were on the 3rd row as the cinema was really full packed.

twas quite fast paced, it would be easy for you to get lost in the story if you haven't read the book...but i enjoyed it...i love luna, i love ginny, and the twins. but cho chang is quite blah in spite of the quite longish kissing scene opps...no more spoilers now. but harry's bod is to die for...for a young man huh!

the final scene is so astig, i wanna be a part of that fab 6 yey!

i wanna watch it again but am sure we'll watch it at home over and over and over again as soon as the dvd is out.

Rico is not with Rivermaya anymore

Dear friends, i am no longer with the band and management of rivermaya. I have been with the group from the start, and after 14 great years, I am now quite excited about the chance to finally do other things with my life, pursue endeavors outside of the entertainment spotlight. This is a desire I have made known to my group as early as 2005 and have already postponed several times. I will surely miss the music and the fans and will always cherish the experience. I hope you will continue supporting the group and the whole of opm. My work is done. Thank you for all your incredible love and support.

Rico Blanco (http://amillionflames.multiply.com/)

i've always loved rico, i've always loved rivermaya. i remember bringing them to iligan before for a show. well, i lost a great deal of money over that event due to lousy transaction deals but i will always love them. they are just so adorable. not to mention that their band has been one of the best in the local industry.

i'm happy for him though...but i can't help but be senti...

and yeah, i can relate...i feel i could relate...haaay...

abangan na lang....:)

a weekend with tori

turned out i had to stay home again for the weekend. i've a "lakad" (for lack of a better term) which was once again rescheduled. but what the heck, am a resilient kiddo after all. no need to sulk in one corner huh! (yeah right)

i took the time to surf and surf and i realized am missing tori once more. my love for tori go back a long long time ago when a friend of mine introduced me to her pretty good year song so i bought the under the pink album. and i fell in love instantly i started buying her next ones and even backtracked on the previously released albums. i even had a lot of print outs of her pics and lyrics and life story, everything about her which i could get my hands on.

i also asked some friends abroad to get me singles of her which i couldn't fine here. yeah, i've met some rare friends too all because we worship the same goddess.

when neil gaiman came to the country and had schedules for a book signing i and my good friend JB took the time off to line up just for the autographs. never mind if we had to line up for a freakin 6 hours. and of course, i let him sign my Death and The High Cost of Living comic book only because, well of course, tori wrote the introduction ehe! and yeah, all i said to him was "pls, next time bring tori here with you!" hehehe i felt so ashamed of myself much later having realized what i just did! anyway you can review the full story here.

well anyway, i found myself itching for mp3s of here as most of my files are in my computer back home. i was fortunate enough to have found the site www.hereinmyhead.com where i could download almost all the tori hits i could find. yi-ha! so if you view my multiply account you can hear my goddess lulling you to a fantastic consciousness you never knew existed.

as if i was not ecstatic enough i woke up this early morning with a text message from my sister saying that she has finally found me the Tales of a Librarian double cd which i've been wanting for so long.

haaay, this is the layp!

Hotline Opens to Counsel Heartbroken Potter Fans
Lifestyle
A British book retailer plans to set up a counseling hotline for all heartbroken fans of Harry Potter, who is going to die in the much awaited next book.

The seventh and final book of J. K. Rowling includes the death of the popular character.

It is already topping the charts at Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com, and a deluxe edition of the book is second despite a hefty pricetag.

tainted frailties

i just heard one of the saddest news today. apparently, the adopted daughter of our colleague is six months pregnant...

she's just 16...

and she doesn't know who the father is.

i was too stunned for a while i wasn't able to react at once. then i had goosebumps and i almost felt the tears starting to well up. yeah, motherhood may have softened me up a bit but news like this is just really hard to take. we know it happens everywhere but we still get shocked when it hits right home.

often we ask ourselves what is indeed happening with the world today?

i've been scanning my niece's friendster and there's one other girl actually showing off her bulging tummy. i learned she is but 17 and has stopped school. yet there she is posing proudly as if being a mother at 17 and single at that is the best achievement a girl could ever have. and yeah, her mom was the one who took the pics.

sometimes i feel that maybe we just watch too many movies and look up to whoever looks sparkly out there. it feels scary that our kids actually watch too much of britney spears.

o dear.

really glad i have a son.

argh!! i wanted that handshake too! stupid me, i got so starstrucked i wasn't able to do a thing!!! who's that gu na nkapamewang behind him? i guess he's one of the organizers?? kinda cute huh? hehehe...he was the one who told us that for a worst case scenario we might not be able to have anything signed but instead get a group pic with neil with like 50 other fans??? uh-uh! good thing we still made it through ;) Posted by Picasa

it was such a riot! neil (close kami eh :P!) really looked hot in his signature black shirt (minus the leather jacket). we spotted a few characters too who we thought was vying for "best in costume" heheh sowee we we're too bored in line we had to look for eye candies to amuse ourselves. our winner was that girl who wore all black with a catchy silver ankh pendant ala Death. nope i did not get a pic as i value her privacy. ;) Posted by Picasa

even after hours and hours of signing he still had the sweetest smile...how i envy that girl. Posted by Picasa

goin gaga over gaiman...

"hi marinela!"

" hi, and pls. say hi to tori for me."

"you're not the first girl to tell me that i should tell her to come and play for the Philippines"

"yeah, you should bring her next time. especially now that you're here."

i guess those were my words when i finally faced my god, neil gaiman, after queuing for like 7 hours in gateway mall yesterday. looking back, i realized how rude i might have sounded. all i blabbered on was tori i just hope he would not have been offended. and yeah, i don't think i even bothered to say thank you. i was fumbling and mumbling then left. my friend kinda told me he was still saying something when i left but then i barely noticed that of course.

what may have been worse was that my friend, Jb, who's another raving tori fan also said the same things like, "Please bring tori amos here!". We we're both aghast later on realizing that we may have sounded inconsiderate at that time. Looking back, we were even envious at those girls who got hugged and kissed or at least had handshakes. Jb was like practicing, "Can i molest you?". We were both aiming for at least a hug or a peck in the cheek or at least "isang kurot lang" and yet we were so starstruck we got nothing at all.

i was just really dumbfounded. i guess i felt so small being near him. i felt like he was my true god i could not even look him straight in the eyes. my, i wasn't even able to touch him when he was just an arm's length away!

heheh, before i continue ranting and raving on let me at least say a bit about gaiman. i first got to know gaiman through his graphic novels/comic books, the Sandman series. i have yet to collect the entire 10 comic books yet so far i only have 4 of them. each comic book would cost about a thousand bucks eh. but he's got his other fantasy novels though as Stardust, Neverwhere, Good Omens, American Gods, to name but a few. i think i have all his books. what added to the thrill and admiration is that he is also closely related to my music goddess, tori amos! i specifically had my "death and the high cost of living" graphic novel signed as it was tori who wrote the introduction.

oh well...when i got home past 9pm i realized how stupid i was for everything that i did and did not do. i could have at least looked and known the color of his eyes or at least told him to enjoy more of the Philippines, as there's more to our country than book signings! man, the guy had been signing for like 5-6 hours nonstop (well he did took a quick cr break as we waited). and to think that was already his 3rd day! i heard he signed for 3000 fans in powerplant the other day. drat, he must be that tired and traumatized with his experience and worse all i said was "say hi to tori for me!" was i thinkin????

haay naku, buti na lng i've a couple of shots and videos shots of him to remind me of my katangahan heheheh....
